Most reef keepers test for nitrite during the initial tank cycle and then set the kit aside once the tank is established. The assumption is that nitrite disappears after cycling is complete but in a mature reef system, nitrate is routinely converted back to nitrite as part of denitrification within live rock and anaerobic filter media. If that final conversion to nitrogen gas stalls for any reason, toxic nitrite can accumulate quietly in an otherwise healthy-looking tank, at levels that many less sensitive test kits will under-read or miss entirely.

The Salifert Nitrite Test Kit is formulated with reagents specifically chosen to avoid amine interference, a common limitation in cheaper nitrite kits where naturally occurring amino acids in the water cause false-low readings at low nitrite concentrations. The result is a highly sensitive, fast test that produces an intense colour development within minutes, making even trace levels straightforward to detect against the comparison chart. Each kit provides approximately 50 tests and detects from 0.5 ppm. Compatible with marine, reef, and freshwater aquariums.
